At the September 18 City Council Meeting in Petersburg, City Treasurer Kevin Brown accepted a presentation check from James E. Cornwell, Jr., of the Sands Anderson law firm representing $1,000,000 in delinquent real estate taxes collected for the city since the firm was engaged to pursue past due taxpayers.
The city hired Sands Anderson PC’s Virginia local government lawyers about eighteen months ago. Funds representing the tax obligations of the property owners are raised through the use of a number of judicial procedures, including judicial sales or auctions. Notices of these sales, along with others across the state, are posted on the law firm’s VaDelinquentTaxSale.com website.
“It is a pleasure to work with the Treasurer and the City on these matters,” said Cornwell, supervising attorney for the delinquent real estate tax collections.
Founded in 1842, Sands Anderson has 70 lawyers practicing in its five offices in Richmond, Christiansburg, Fredericksburg and McLean, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina. For 2012, the firm is ranked ninth in the Virginia Lawyers Weekly annual listing of the state’s largest law firms. Sands Anderson provides a full range of legal services to corporations and businesses, healthcare providers, financial institutions, state and local governments, the insurance industry, and individuals.
